1) How long have you been doing CF and how long have you been a member of CFE?

I have been doing crossfit for 11 months, all at CFE.

2) What was your favorite moment ?

A couple of months ago I was struggling with a timed WOD. I was the last one to finish & the 5am crew was cheering me on. I completed the workout with just seconds to spare. That workout is what convinced me to do the Crossfit Open this year.

3) What did you accomplish this year that you didn’t expect to?

Mentally – my confidence & attitude has changed. Physically – so many things. Lifting heavy, first double under, completing WOD’s that looked impossible to me.

4) What was your favorite workout ?

Anyone that has rowing in it, I love the rower.

5) What is the one thing you would tell others interested in CrossFit and/or thinking of trying the CrossFit Open next year?

Don’t wait “to get in better shape”, crossfit will get you there. Conquer your fears & step outside of your comfort zone. It is life changing!!

Tranformation 2.0 – Ron Webb

Transformation 2.0

This is an update to my initial Crossfit transformation story because I’ve had to change the way I view Crossfit in my life. I’m going on my third year of Crossfit and in the beginning (Transformation 1.0), things were very different that they are now. Here is a breakdown of how my transformation has progressed.

Year 1

My first year of Crossfit, I named, “Balls to the Walls”. Everything was new and it was all about experiencing and doing as much as I could. Learn new movements, watch a bunch of Crossfit videos, etc. I spent that year chasing the gold star; I wanted as many PR as I could get each and every week.

I did promise myself that I would spend the first quarter of Crossfit scaling all of the workouts. I knew my propensity toward total immersion in everything Crossfit. That lead to very few rest days, hitting every Sunday Open Gym, and for about 3 months, I was getting in two workouts per day as I took a weightlifting class and gymnastics class.

Year 2

I call this year, “Paying the Piper” as my body started revolting on me. Injuries mounted, I would catch almost every bug that came through town, and my allergies were a mess. I always stay pretty tight on my nutrition, but my body couldn’t keep up. I managed the injuries pretty well as to never really be “off”, but I could scale and keep coming to class, stay in the groove, and every now-and-then, I’d hit some gold stars.

I set a goal to have my second Crossfit Open be better than my first. I was close to the Top 100 in my region for my age group the first time around and really thought I could crack into that Top 100 the second time around. Guess what? I didn’t. Totally crapped the bed.

Year 3

Coming out of the 2017 Open, I’ve had to change my view of Crossfit. I’m really focusing on my engine. I want to keep my cardio up and have the ability to finish all the hard workouts. I scale appropriately, and I’m willing to give up the gold stars in everything. I know I’m going to have to make tradeoffs in some of the big weights I used to hit in my deadlift, squat, and some of the other areas in order to be able to rest, decrease the wear-and-tear on my body, and overall focus on quality of my movements and my endurance. I’m hoping this will carry me forward into the 2018 Open with a new view on what I want to accomplish.

Now, I just have to setup a 15-minute goal-setting session with one of our coaches to help me devise a tight plan for February 2018.

Check out Ron’s journey below!!

Throwback Thursdays: Nacho

Today on Throwback Thursday, we get a peek into Nacho’s journey at CrossFit Equality. Having joined us in April of 2016, Nacho is coming up on 2 years of being a part of the CFE Crew. He’s a devoted family man and athlete who strives to support both his life inside and outside the gym. In addition, Nacho has loyaly dedicated to safekeep our home in Houston. As a Houston Police Officer, he is committed to uphold the law and the rights of all individuals.

Below you will see a small slideshow of Nacho’s progression over the years. He is an astounding athlete who has increased many of his lifts during years of training. For example, his deadlift has increased from 265lbs (when he started) to 380lbs (present time, heck, it might be even more!). Push press skyrocketed from 135lbs to 225lbs. Other lifts such as power clean, snatch, bench press and many more have also increased significantly. Nacho is a like an unstopable train, a man with limitless achievements in reach of acomplishment as his journey continues. He is also full of character and humor with his unique (yet elegant) costumes.

We hope Nacho can call our little box his home as he has become a very influential part of our family. Thank you Nacho for all you do for the Houston community, for CFE and for the people that you hold dear – you’re the best!

Today on Throwback Thursday, we get to look into the transformation of our very own – Jennifer Hornsby! For those who don’t know, Jennifer joined us back in January of 2015. She is coming up on her three year anniversary with CFE so we write this today to express our gratitude towards someone with such dedication and enthusiasm at our box.

Her smile is a presence of heart, one that strives during tough workouts and is able to make dim days bright. She can be a jester sometimes, making everyone’s day with her humor and jolly personality. She has two young well-behaved boys that follow her to the box and give her the time she needs to do something she enjoys. That family bond is definitely something that has impacted her in a very positive way. In addition, she has gained many friends over her years at CFE – making numerous unbreakable bonds.

With enough said, take a look at the slideshow below to see her progress over time. The pictures alone are not an accurate representation of her overall transformation, but display a glimps into her journey. Join us at CFE to meet amazing people like Jennifer! Thank you Jennifer for being a part of CrossFit Equality. We hope you continue to flourish and reach all of your goals and dreams!!

“You’re definitely not a number there. They honestly care. They check in with you when you’re gone, send birthday cards or congratulation cards. They give you guidance in anything from personal or gym related. They truly care and never judge. I feel relaxed and comfortable there unlike previous gym experiences. Coach Ann is so personable and funny. Her smile and positive attitude will make a bad day better. Also helps when the WOD is a long run. She always keeps you going with her cheering. She motivates everybody even if it’s with her cheers or making you try something new.”

Find the balance

On May 4th, 2016, Swami joined CrossFit Equality after his No Sweat Intro with Ann. During this time he was able to open up and express his fitness aspirations and personal goals. Swami was excited to get going with his fitness lifestyle with a goal to lose weight and get back down to 200 pounds. After undergoing his fundamentals and starting the Crossfit Program, Swami stayed consitent. He came to at least three classes per week, took personal training sessions to improve some of his technical skills and pushed through the difficulties that come with all Crossfit workouts. Slowly but surely he started to see results, body fat started to go down as his muscle mass increased. The scale still didn’t have the number he wanted to see, but his appearance was changing drastically. The images above are in chronoclogical order, but they do not justify just how much Swami has changed.

In the last couple of weeks Swami has finally gotten under his 200 mark and reached his initial goal. His focus has no shifted to his next target – rack up the pullups! Swami has been staying after class to practice using resistance bands. He’s working on his upper body strength so he can finally get a pullup. Even after tough WODs (the ones that leave you breathless on the floor and asking yourself why you do this stuff to begin with), you can find Swami at the rig, racking up chin-ups even after everyone has left. He is a dedicated individual who’s success is unmeasurable. The thing that we find most admirable about Swami is his ability to find a balance between work, excerise and real life. He’s a man who loves to travel for pleasure and has done so many times this past year.

As I write this I’m sure he’s in the mountains of Peru, hiking away with all of his pals. Even on vacation he’s sure to stay active to not lose everything he’s worked so hard to achieve. When he returns we’ll certainly see him back at the box getting right back after it as though he never left. We at CFE want to congratulate Swami for all of his accomplishments. He’s a joy to have in every class and we’re glad to have him as part of our family.

Thank you Swami for being so cool and awesome. Keep striving for more and you’ll achieve all of your goals!!

HOW CFE HAS CHANGED ME

A long time ago I was a soccer player, played all my life up until I was 29. Then I had back surgery, and that part of my life was gone forever. I missed the comraderie and family aspect that came with playing on a team.

So I tried to fill that void, I joined 24 hour fitness. Partly because my surgeon told me I need to and partly because I knew that I need to be physically active somehow. I paid for a trainer for a few years but they kept moving on to better things because basically 24 hour sucked. I cut back my time there, got married and shifted focus.

Then my world crumbled, my oldest brother was killed and a year later my dad died. I lost who I was and I had a lot of holes that need to be filled. So I dove in to work and allowed myself to be drowned by it. I was angry often and frankly not fun to be around most of the time. We were active some, riding horses and rodeo involvement but I was missing the feeling that you get from being part of a team.

I heard about CrossFit and looked online to see if something was close to try it. Low and behold there was a place about 2 miles from the house. So I showed up, took the intro class and almost puked. I was interested. I came back a few days later for my first WOD, Hot Shots 19. Courtney Adams asked if I wanted to partner up and I said sure. It was hard but I was sold on it.

A few years later, I am still here. I have found my team I lost over a decade ago. My holes are filled and my smile has been found. I quit the job I had and started putting me first in my life. I feel guilty when I miss and blessed when I am at the box. It’s a love hate relationship I have with CrossFit, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. CFE is my second home and my second family. I shudder to think who or what I would be had I not found Ann, Jeremy, and Michael. Everyone else has just been a bonus and a blessing in my life.

I joined Crossfit Equality 4 1/2 years ago and it has transformed me in so many ways.  Mentally, it’s a place for me to relieve stress.  It’s a time that I forget everything going on in my fast-paced world and focus on me.  It’s an addiction and I keep coming back because it makes me feel good.  Physically, I have lost over 30 lbs and have kept most of it off for all those years.  Before then, I was a balloon where I’d gain the weight and then I would deflate with all the yo-yo diets.  With CFE, I have learned to eat healthier foods and to balance those sometimes bad foods. Today, CFE is more than just physically losing weight, it’s an addiction to a fitness routine because when it comes down to it… it just simply makes me feel good.

Above are the recent pictures of Jessica Davis’ before and after transformation. In 17 weeks she has lost a little over 11 pounds, 4 inches in her chest, 3.5 inches off her waist and 2.5 inches in her hips. Jessica started CrossFit Equality’s Nutrition Accountability Program in late June of 2017. Her results from the images above are evident and the numbers are simple notes to prove it. With the help of our Nutrition Advisors she has made tremendous physical and mental change. She’s learned about her dietary needs and is able to apply this knowledge in everyday life.

However, even though Nutrition may be 80-90% of the battle, exercise plays a huge role in her change. Jessica is enrolled in our Unlimited CrossFit Classes. Not only does this give her the opportunity to come to every class anytime of the week, but the flexibility to ensure she also gets her rest days. Most of the time you can find Jessica with the 5AM Crew having a blast, but sometimes you may spot her in the 4:30PM Classes with her friend Jennifer! She’s made bonds over the years and is destined to continue and grow as time goes on.

If you’re looking to get results like Jessica, don’t hestitate and Schedule a Free No Sweat Intro Today!! It only takes 30 minutes of your time, so no excuses 😛
